SATELIS 500 Premium/Executive

Judging by the colour, this must be the Executive.

Peugeot's largest scooter is powered by a liquid-cooled, four-stroke, four-valve single with EFI and 493 cc displacement that pumps out a claimed 37.4 hp. Maximum speed is 160 km/h.

Forks are 40 mm in diameter, and four-way shocks are placed out back. Single brakes discs are 260 mm in front and 240 mm behind, with ABS and PBS available on the Executive model (which also comes with a chain lock but that’s it for differences, save for colour options).

Seat height (which is the same on all Peugeot scooters of more than 50 cc) is 784 mm. Weight is a hefty 213 kg, and wheels are 14-inch front and rear. The fuel tank will hold 13.5 litres.

Other trinkets include a sport windscreen, titanium exhaust gate, plenty of underseat storage (should be good for two full face lids) and a cell phone charging jack.

Available colours are black and grey in the Premium series, and additionally white in the Executive series. MSRP is $9,995.00 for the Premium and $10,995.00 for the Executive.

SATELIS 250 Premium

The 250 keeps the Satelis lines.

This midsize scooter is powered by a liquid-cooled four-stroke, four-valve, 244 cc single that’s fuel injected and makes 22 hp.

A pair of 37 mm forks reside up front, with twin shocks behind. Single brake discs sit on each wheel, 260 mm in front, and 226 mm on the rear wheel. Weight is a claimed 160 kg, though the factory does not specify whether that's wet or dry. Wheels are slightly larger than some other scooters, at 14-inch front and 13-inch rear.

The 250 Premium comes with a hydraulically-assisted storage compartment that will hold two full-face helmets, 12V outlet for your cell phone, and a coded key with immobilizer. It's available in black, grey, and silver. MSRP is $7,999.00.

A supercharged 125 scooter? You gotta love that!

A supercharged four-stroke single with EFI and 125cc of displacement produces 20 hp, which is five more stallions than the normally aspirated model gets and only two down on the 250 version.

Forks are 37 mm and there are two four-way-adjustable shocks behind, while a 260 mm front disc slows rotation of the front wheel and is assisted by a 210 mm disc in back. ABS and PBS (power assisted braking) is standard, and wheels are 14 inch front and 13 inch rear.  Supercharging adds weight, and this model is a plunky 171 kg.

Michelin tires, a sport seat, storage for just one full-face helmet, and a compartment for your water bottle are standard, as are cell phone jack and coded key. Remote control opening of a storage compartment is optional.

MSRP is $10,995.00, which is the same price as the 500 Executive, but then it's not often that you get a supercharged scooter! However, if you want one you'll have to be quick as apparently only 25 of the buggers are being brought into Canada.

SATELIS 125 Premium

No supercharger, but it's also lighter and a chunk cheaper!

Like the supercharged Blacksat, this midsize scooter is powered by a liquid-cooled single, but with only electronic fuel injection feeding it gas, the 125 Premium gets by with just 15 hp.

Suspension, wheels, and brakes are similar to the Blacksat's, though it may not come with Michelin rubber, and anti-skid and power assisted braking are not available either.

The Premium is considerably lighter than its heavy-breathing associate, at a scant 160 kg. A coded key with immobilizer, digital trip computer, and room for two full-face helmets are standard features.

Available colours, or perhaps we should say “shades,” are black, grey, and silver. MSRP is $6,195.00.

SPEEDFIGHT Ultimate 2 and RCUP

These 49 cc 'Speedfight' scooters come in two flavours, but a liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, carbureted, two-stroke motor lies in the heart of both.

Front suspension on both models is funky single arm fork though the rear is a run of the mill single hydraulic shock. A 180 mm “Shuricane” disc in front and standard 180 mm disc in back take care of deceleration chores, and tires are 12 inches front and rear.

Both scooters will hold your full-face helmet under the seat, but not your passenger's, and both look ahead with double optic 35 watt lenticular (?) headlights. Dry weight on both is 95 kg, and seat height is 810 mm.

The Ultimate 2 brings some colour into the field, with a Blue Star and Varnished Techmium (eh?) paint scheme. It also has a two-tone passenger seat in black and grey. The RCUP adds a touch of red in its front calipers, and a black plastified passenger seat and it's available in Black Mother-of-Pearl and White.

MSRP is $3,995.00 for the Ultimate 2, or $4,150.00 for the RCUP.

TKR Furious 50

The Furious settles down with a touch of pink.

A 49 cc, air-cooled two-stroke single powers this scooter.

Front suspension duties are handled by inverted forks, and a single hydraulic shock sits out back. Brakes are a mix: 190 mm disc in front, plus a rear-wheel drum. Weight is 81 kg.

Seat height is a relatively low 801 mm, and tires are the smallest of the lot, at 10 inches front and rear.

The Furious comes standard with a digital speedometer, a “sport” exhaust, and storage for one full-face helmet. Available colours are Matte Black and Anodized Red; and Matte Luxus Grey and Blue.

MSRP is $3,745.00

The only moped (as in “motor assisted pedal contraption thingy”) the Peugot line up can lay claim to a venerable heritage, having been launched originally way back in 1971.

It's powered by a two-stroke single of the same displacement as the 50 cc scooters, but with air cooling, and features some grown-up appendages, with telescopic fork and 16-inch wheels, the rear controlled by a pair of shock absorbers. Keeping to the vintage theme, drums handle front and rear braking duties (as in drum brakes, not bongos).

Dry weight is just 42 kg, and available colours are black, silver, and Aluminium and Magic Blue. Yes, if you get one with the Magic Blue colouring, the moped has the ability to transform into a bicycle with a motor and back again. Actually, I think the other colours may be able to do that too.

MSRP is $2,195.00.

Screw the Smart car!

If you mated a BMW C1 (a roofed scooter that was classed as a car in Europe) with an MP3 (Piaggio's three-wheel scooter, not Apple's music playing device), you might end up with something like Peugeot's glass-roofed two-seat HYmotion3 Compressor Concept, which showed up at the Paris motor show.

The two-seater HYmotion features electric motors driving the two front wheels, and a supercharged 125 cc internal combustion engine driving the rear.

Peugeot says it can run in electric only, IC only, or both modes, and that performance figures are comparable to a conventional 400 cc scooter, at 0-100 km/h in 11.2 seconds with a 110 km/h top speed. The batteries for the electric motors are recharged via a regenerative braking system.

While Peugeot has been a fat zero in North America for many years (though there is now an importer who is starting to bring in some of the scooters), it's still a very big player in both the automotive and scooter markets in France and some other areas of Europe.
