You meet the nicest bastards at the MBSR

If you missed it on CMG, be sure to catch Jamie Leonard's excellent rider's view of the 2009 Mad Bastard Scooter Rally here. Jamie took a Tomos moped around the route, took close to the 24 hours to do it, ended up pushing up most of the hills and still didn't do the bonus loop.

A Mad Bastard indeed.

We've also put together a survey for riders of the 2009 Mad Bastard so that we can get your all important feedback on the rally. You should have received a link to the survey via email, but if you haven't, please contact us and we'll get it sent to you right away.

Written by Editor 'arris on Mon, Jun 22nd, 2009

sm_title1.jpgIt took me a week to do, but there's a lot of post rally stuff to get done. The Editor 'Arris view of how the 2009 Mad Bastard Scooter Rally went down has been posted on CMG Online (or on this site if you click to it from the "about" menu).

We've also posted a galley of the best off pics on Smug Mug which enables the user (that's you) to download the full res pics for your own usage (i.e. printing), and thus saving us the need to send out picture CDs.

Thanks again to all who participated. We'll be sure to keep everyone updated about the next one.

Cheers, Rob

Dressed up as a toilet and riding a vintage Indian scoot!

I think we can claim the 2009 Mad Bastard Scooter Rally to be a raving success!

Madness reigned supreme as gorillas, a monkey and two bananas, various superheroes and a team of dirty girls with blow-up sex dolls (amongst others) headed into the darkness in the early hours of Saturday for a 749 km route through western Quebec and eastern Ontario.

Of the 75 riders that registered, 72 made it to the starting tent, with 59 eventually limping back to base within their class time limits. This year’s overall winner was Ben Yu Schott (aka Mad Kitty) who managed to tally up an incredible 921 points out of a possible 1000, covering the distance in 22 and a half hours on his 1963 Honda C100.

Team Dirty Girls ...

Ben came all the way from Whitehorse (though he sensibly shipped the bike and flew out) and goes home with a brand new KYMCO Super 9 AC courtesy of KYMCO Canada.

This year’s charity was the Kids Help Phone, who sent two reps to help out on the Friday registration and give a quick talk about where the money raised will go. Through money raised directly by riders and the selling of raffle tickets on the Friday evening we managed to hand over just over $16,500!

We'll be posting a full report of the rally this Friday on CMG, so be sure to tune back in then to experience all the madness. Oh and be sure to check out this Saturday's Toronto Star for Andrew Meeson's impressions of the event.

Finally, a big thank you to all that came and faced the madness head on. Without the silliness and scant regard for for reputation that so many of you brought to the MBSR, this rally would simply be not as much fun!

Next stop Gatineau! Print E-mail

Hello fellow Mad Bastards!

Well, the day is almost upon us.  Just three days till we get our Mad Hats on and head out to the hills for a nice slowwwww ride in the countryside.

BE PREPPARED!

Bobb_sm.jpg
Bobb knows how to dress sensibly ...

A few us did a last scouting of the route just over a week ago and we all agreed that it will be the most urban free Mad Bastard yet ... and the most hilly. This will add an extra challenge to the 50 cc scoots out there, but just remember for every up, there's a down shortly after.

One of the factors that our scouting reminded us of is that mother nature may not always cooperate. We saw rain, hail, high winds and a temperature drop to a measly 3C so please, please, please be sure to bring thermals and waterproofs with you.

You can always decide what to put on based on Friday night's weather forecast, but at least be sure to bring it all to the hotel with you. Oh yes and two or three pairs of gloves might be good too (riding with wet gloves simply sucks).

THE MAPS

Space_ship_sm.jpg
Even spaceships come with map holders.

We've finished the maps and have splurged out on colour printing to make it easier for you. Actually, helper Bobb Todd managed to get a deal through work for cheap printing, so we didn't exactly splurge. Still, the maps and directions have been finalized and here's some interesting stats:

The route consists of a main and a bonus loop. The main route is 560 km but if you opt to do the bonus that'll be a grand total of 749 km. Instead of making you come back to a nice warm hotel room in order to decide whether to head back out for the bonus loop, this year you'll have to decide about 50 km away, which should take some of the warm and dry seductiveness out of the equation.

Maps will be several sheets of 8 1/2 x 11 stapled together. We will be providing ziplock baggies to hold them, but you may either want to bring your own map holder or fabricate something to hold it. BTW, maps can be folded in half to either show the map OR the directions if that helps.

CHARITY

Mike_start_sm.jpg
Forget your donations and we dress you up as a clown.

We've done way better than we ever expected with the charity drive, with over $12,000 dollars raised so far for the Kids Help Phone! Well done to all that have raised the funds. We're closing the online donations page tomorrow (June 9th) but you can still get them through the paper pledge form up until the Friday night. Please be sure to bring any cash and cheque pledges with you to registration to ensure that you get credited fully.

RIDER BLOGS

If you haven't been following the rider's blog page, then you owe it to yourself to check out the postings. Bvardi has posted several hilarious updates documenting his lead up to the rally and PimpMyScoot is (hopefully) posting updates as he treks all the way from Vancouver to Gatineau on his scooter!

Now that's committed (in all senses of the word)

WEEKEND DETAILS

We will be sending out a pdf of all the pertinent info regarding the weekend's activities on Wednesday June 10th. BTW the KYMCO demo day is from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Friday, so be sure to arrive early.

Update for May 29th Print E-mail
Written by Editor 'arris on Thu, May 28th, 2009

Two weeks!

The 2009 Mad Bastard Scooter Rally is just two weeks away ... I guess I'd better organize the damn thing. Just kidding, a bit. Okay, so let's get to the latest updates.

DEMO DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN

kymco_hq.jpg
You don't have to go to Taiwan to test a KYMCO.

KYMCO Canada have confirmed that they will be putting on a demo day at the Four Points hotel just for Rally attendees starting at 3 pm and finishing at 6 pm. The rides will depart from the hotel's parking lot though you'll have to be registered for the rally and sign a waiver before plonking yer arse on any of them.

If you have a valid M1 license you will be able to ride anything under 200cc, but with a valid M or M2 license they can ride all units ... though not sure what you do if you're on a Quebec licence. You also have to come suitably dressed (inc DOT helmet) and you can't ride with a passenger.

GET A BLOG

You may have noticed that we've set up the blogging option on the MBSR website and have our first customer - Jamie Leonard. Jamie's getting into the spirit of things and has gone mad writing about this and that and all very funny to boot.

We have a blog space for any registered rider, so if you want to share your thoughts as you prep for the Mad Bastard, drop us an email and we'll get you set up.

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED

elevator_crabs.jpg
Registration is closed – even to crabs.

As you may (or not) noticed, the Rider Registration has now closed and we're tickled pink (and blue and yellow) to say that the MBSR is a sell out! Err, hang on, no not in the "we'll drop our pants for the highest bidder" kind of way, but rather in the "all 75 spots have been taken and paid for" way.

Though if you've got $20 I might be able to loosen off the old corset ...

Did I just say that out loud?

I should add that we haven't yet updated the rider listing page so any smart arses who do the math will have to wait until Monday when we'll get that done and posted.

BUT NOT FOR GUESTS

We've set up a guest registration page (under the "registration" menu) for anyone planning on either bringing or being a guest. However, this will shut down on 30th May as we need to know the numbers to be able to order food and t-shirts.

If you want to bring a guest and you want them to be able to attend the banquets then they have to sign up or they will not be able to attend!

RULE UPDATES

arris_beer.jpg
Beer is good.

Seems that we think of new rules every week ... which we do, so here's this week's new rule; If you are riding in a team and therefore competing for the team prize of a 2-4 of Moosehead beer for each team member, then you should know that if any of your team ends up being DNF (Did Not Finish) then that will apply to the whole team and you can kiss your 2-4 dreams goodbye. Yes, you all gotta finish or you're out of the beer running.

Of course, this has nothing to do with the individual prize (the KYMCO Super 9), which you would still be eligible for providing that you are not the team member left in a ditch.

CHARITY TARGET REACHED!

We've reached and surpassed our target for raising funds for the Kids Help Phone! As of Thursday night we have raised a total of $7,770, that's $270 above and beyond our specified target. A big thank you to the generosity of all you Mad Bastards.

BTW, top fundraiser to date is Sabina Heilman from KYMCO Canada at $1,475, with John Seesink coming in a close second with $1,180. We're going to keep the charity donation page open until the 7th June, so keep the fund raising going and we'll see what we can hand over to the Kids Help Phone on the 12th.

GOT A ROOM?

Rob_sm.jpg
Be prepared for an early start!

If not, then you have exactly 1 day to do so as the block rate is history on June 1st. Right now the hotel is very short on rooms with 2 queens, although if you need one, they may be able to shuffle some around. Still, call now and get it sorted if you haven't already done so.

Of course, there's no requirement to stay at the Four Points, but it does mean that you're where the action is, can wait till the last possible moment before getting up on Saturday and be straight to bed when you get back in.

To get a room, best bet is to call the hotel directly at 1-800-567-9607 and ask for Bruno.

CONFIRM YOUR INFO

Last week we sent out a PDF doc of all registrees to confirm their info (t-shirt size being important before we place the order). If you haven't checked it over and emailed us with any corrections/changes, then please do so immediately as it's locked in as of Monday.
