The GS1100E is relatively simple in mechanical terms ...

Hi there ... I have a beautiful, pristine 1982 Suzuki GS1100E that has been stored in my garage in Edmonton for the past eight years.

I want to have the beast completely ungummed, serviced, tuned, tires etc. for a road trip through the states next summer but no dealer/service dept. etc. will look at it because of its age.

I doubt any of the work is all that mechanical but I am not a mechanic and want it to be perfect. Who do you suggest as the best in the general area (or further if necessary) for this type of work? I'll ship it wherever and will pay what it takes.

Thanks for your help.

Jim

Sorry Jim, can't help you on this one.
Its perhaps a question best asked through the Soapbox, but since you're here already...
Oh, Faithful Readers ???

Yeah, we're stuck out at odd ends of the country so, we can't help you with direct recommendations. I'd suggest getting a manual, a few basic hand tools and having at it yourself. Those old beasts are dead simple to work on compared to the cramped confines of today's sportbikes.

I don't have any shop suggestions (readers???), but if you do decide to tackle it yourself I would do the following:

1) Buy a good manual (a factory one would be good)

2) Replace the battery and any fuel left in the tank.

3) Drain the carbs (although they'll likely be bone dry - just hope someone drained them before storage!).

4) Replace the oil and filter

5) Try and start 'er up. Hey, it might just work.

6) If it doesn't work then remove the carbs and take them to a mechanic. The local shop may be more open to doing the carbs instead of the whole bike.

Other than that you'll likely have to give it a good going over for any other potential issues (fork seal leaks, shocks, electrics, etc) and you'll need a new set of tires for sure.

Go on, you know you want to do it ...

You might want to look send your carbs here for rebuilding. He specializes in Suzuki/Kawasaki bikes from 70's & 80's.

Red Good a sometime poster to the Soapbox could most likely get it back up to snuff. An old time mechanic with his hands in the future. He's located in Regina, but I'd take a bike to him if nobody locally would do the work and I wasn't mechanically inclined

I think you should ship it to me and I'll take good care of it. Forever. I still sort of miss mine now and then.

Try Sherwood Motorcycle in Sherwood Park. Zoli is a great mechanic, and does work on old motorcycles.

I think my message got screwed up somehow. I suggest Rocket Cycle in Toronto. Robbie did a great job on a 1982 KZ1000 I had a number of years ago.

Although this thread appears to have dried up, I can recommend Alberta Cycle on Yellowhead Trail in Edmonton. I have a '78 Suzuki GS750 and they did a fine job of replacing my front and rear sprockets a couple summers ago. Check them out. www.albertacycle.com
