Katana: a good choice

Your views on a bike purchase, please:

I'm getting back into riding again after a 10 year absence. I'm looking at a sport/tour. What do you think about the 2001 Kawasaki ZX6E? I'm 6' and weight about 190 lb. I'd like to do day-long trips on it as well as use it as a daily driver.

Is this a good choice or is there something else you feel is more appropriate either in style or engine size?

I was hoping to keep it below 1000 cc as I heard insurance rates go up at that size.

Thanks,
Harry

A supersport bike wouldn't be my first choice for sport-touring, particularly if you've been off bikes for a while, but no question the bike is capable if you're comfortable on it. Given that you're a fair size, you might see if you can find a 600/750 Suzuki Katana (same chassis and dimensions) that would be a little roomier and a little less sport-focused.

I'd be tempted to look at an SV650 or even a DL650, too. However, before buying any bike, get a quote for insurance first as there are some companies that actually discount bigger touring machines, so the 1000 cc rule is not a good one to decide your purchase on.

I think the ZX6E (not the 6R) has ergos similar to the Katana.
The Bandit 600/650 also makes a good beginner ST bike.

I had a ZX-6E(4) for four years, bought new:
- good sport touring ergos (about in the middle)
- good engine, decent low end for 600 in-line
- handling just OK, rear shock not very good
- fairly low seat is WAY too soft for long days, replaced with a
Corbin
- front brake rotors tendancy towards warping

For a first bike, I'd recommend a standard SV650. Tubular bars,
change them if they don't suit you.

Hey,
Thanks for the info. I've found that my quotes for anything 600cc's and over almost double my insurance rates. I do have a deal pending for an '85 GS550. The cost of insurance is reasonable and it fits nicely.

Now all I need to do is get a scooter and some Preperation H for the Mad Bastard Rally!!!
