Maverick Viron in two-stroke mode

When you buy a scooter, your choices are normally limited to colour, and maybe a few accessories. But you can bet the salesman won't ask you, "Do you want that in two-stroke, or four-stroke?"

The appealing feature about Quebec-based Maverick Canada's new-for-Canada 50 cc scooters is just that — you get a choice between a clone of an Italian 50 cc two-stroke and a GY6 four-stroke engine, originally designed by Honda.

The Honda motors are built from a purchased 1980 design, and the two-stroke motors are reverse-engineered copies of something produced by Minarelli back in the day.

Available models are the Viron, the GT1R, and the Spider 2, although a 150 cc model is expected soon too.

Maverick Spider

The scooters use 12- and 13-inch wheels, both the Viron and the Spider feature front and rear wheel discs, and the Viron two-stroke model is, by the way, an altogether more modern liquid-cooled motor. So the question is, do you want that in four-stroke, two-stroke, or even two-stroke liquid-cooled?

Prices are $3,050.00 for the Viron, about $2,500.00 for both the Spider and the GT1R, and about $75.00 more for the four-stroke options.

The bikes are being distributed in Quebec for now, but the manufacturer-importer (they have a dedicated plant in China) plans to get them into dealerships across Canada soon.
