2006 Kawasaki Concours

Hello, I have an ’06 Concours since ’06 and it has treated me very well.

This year however I have been experiencing some stubborn gear shifting. At start up when I pull away it’s harder than hell to shift from first to second. If I rev a bit it slips up no problem. After that first shift it runs smooth for the rest of the day.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, James

Hmmm, only on the first shift of the day you say ?

It could be something's up with the clutch - worn basket, sticking plates OR it might have something to do with whatever oil you're using.

Sorry to be vague, but its one of those things that a test ride would help identify...

Kawasakis have a positive neutral finder, which makes it almost impossible to shift the bike from first to second gear when at a stop.

You don't mention the mileage on your bike, but I suspect that this system may be somehow binding while moving, possibly due to wear. However, repairing this will require a costly engine teardown, so I suggest you leave it as is and maybe reinforce your left boot tip!

Try changing to a quality synthetic oil of a different type than you are running now.

If my understanding is correct (I am not a mechanic), the PNF is three ball bearings on the output shaft of the transmission, arranged so that they slide outward, radially, due to centripetal motion as the shaft spins. When the shaft is not spinning, one of these balls will block the shift fork from being able to select 2nd gear ratio on the drum.

Which leads me back to my original suggestion; there might somehow be nasty crud in there, preventing the balls from making their first journey of the day.
