Malcolm Smith will compete in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb this month — 29 years after the first time he entered the race.

Smith, who was born in British Columbia in 1941 and grew up in California, is one of the world's most famous motorcycle racers and is a U.S. Hall of Fame member.

He said he got bored with "helping out at Pikes Peak" and so decided to enter. His son, Alexander, will also compete.

Smith, who started racing in 1956 on a Matchless, won his first race, and has won the Baja 1000 offroad race three times and won eight gold medals in the International Six Days Trials in the 1960s and '70s. He was also one of the stars in the film On Any Sunday.

It's fitting that Smith should compete in the Pikes Peak event, because it's the second oldest motorsports race in America — this year is the 88th running of what is referred to as the "Race to the Clouds."
